Benjamin Ma

Dr. C. Benjamin Ma is chief of Sports Medicine at UCSF. His special interests include all aspects of shoulder surgery, such as arthroscopy, replacements and tendon transfers; knee arthroscopy surgery such as ligament reconstruction, cartilage replacement and meniscus surgery; and elbow ligament surgery. He also is involved in research on cartilage replacement and imaging as well as the biomechanics of rotator cuff repairs and outcomes. He has received multiple research grants in cartilage and ACL imaging and is involved in multi-center trials in rotator cuff repairs and cartilage resurfacing.

Ma earned an undergraduate degree in bioelectrical engineering at Brown University and a medical degree at Johns Hopkins University. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, where he completed a one-year musculoskeletal research fellowship. Following his residency, Ma completed a second fellowship in shoulder and knee surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
